My Journey

As a writer and reporter working in humanitarian contexts I have dedicated my life to helping crisis survivors share their stories with the world. In 2017, during the height of the Rohingya genocide, I crossed the Bangladesh-Myanmar border into Rakhine State to document the atrocities perpetrated against the Rohingya people. I’ve been fortunate to work with The Telegraph, BBC World Service, and The New York Times as an independent journalist and with the National Geographic Society as a field researcher which has allowed me to amplify the voices of those whose stories often go unheard. Recently I had the privilege of contributing to a special report on military involvement in the Rohingya genocide for Reuters, a piece which won the 2023 Human Rights Press Award.

Since 2014 I have provided humanitarian support to refugees and underserved communities throughout South East Asia including documentation of human trafficking from Rahkine state in 2015 and direct rescue efforts for survivors of the 2013 Rana Plaza disaster in Bangladesh.

In support of Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh I work as a country manager for the non-profit Artolution which provides psychosocial support through collaborative art making in crisis contexts. My most recent project is a collected work documenting the experiences of journalists, witnesses, and translators who have dedicated themselves to bringing the testimonies of the Rohingya people to the world.

Recommendations

'' Suza is definitely a very good journalist. In the broad sense. He is very good producer, cameraman and has also a very genuine and honest approach to things.  I worked with him during the Rohingya crise in Cox Bazar and was very much impressed not only by his professional performance and reliability, but also for his human qualities. A very, very important asset, nowadays. I would definitely recommend him.''

“Mr. Uddin was superb to work with. He is a solid translator, and he is super smart. He is curious, and a critical thinker. He is also trust-worthy. He arrived when he said he would, even when we left for a reporting trip one morning at 5am. Above all, Mr. Uddin is great company. He knows how to talk to people and get them to open up.”

Todd Pitman

Asia-Pacific Correspondent, The Associated Press

“I have known Suza for more than three years and he is one of the most impressive human rights advocates that I’ve met in my more than twenty-five years of human rights work. Suza has a near-insatiable thirst for learning about human rights, culture, and history in Asia, especially in Bangladesh and Myanmar. And he has traveled throughout the region, including spending time in Rakhine State as the 2017 genocide unfolded.”
